Strengths Based
Therapy

Many people arrive at therapy carrying the belief that they are not good enough, that they are not capable, or that there is something permanently wrong with them.

Those messages often come from lived experience, relationships, or the world around them, and they can slowly convince someone that they cannot do difficult things or that change is not possible.

At Collective Hope Therapy, the work is strengths based. This means therapy includes noticing and working with the strengths, resources, capabilities, and positive qualities that someone already holds. It is about helping people see the things they have achieved, the resilience they have shown, the ways they have kept themselves safe, and the moments where they got back up again when life was painful or overwhelming.

Remembering what you hold

Part of this approach is supporting people to remember what is already within them. When someone has been through repeated challenges it can feel easier to see their perceived failures than to recognise their endurance. A therapist can often notice strengths more clearly than the person themselves. As the saying goes, people are often their own worst critic.

Therapy brings attention to the skills and knowledge that can be transferred into the current situation. When people reconnect with their own capacity, it becomes easier to take steps toward the things that would bring satisfaction or relief.

Keeping hope alive

A strengths based approach is also about maintaining hope. People can be defeated by being convinced not to try. Noticing and remembering what has helped in the past can support someone to have a go again. When they do, they may begin to experience changes that feel meaningful or give life more ease.

Hope and possibility are central to the work at Collective Hope Therapy. If someone is able to engage and try, there is no reason things cannot change for the better.

Realistic, honest and supportive

This approach is not about rose coloured glasses, avoiding difficult truths, or pretending that mistakes do not matter. It does not dismiss the areas where someone wants to learn or improve. The focus is on empowering people to make the changes that feel right for them, and to support them while they navigate that process.
